In recent years a Bradford resident experienced a marriage breakdown and had to leave the marital home. He spent several months staying with friends and relatives, sleeping on couches and floors. With no stable home he was not allowed to have his children stay with him adding to his stress. His health suffered and he lost his job. The Local Authority did not consider him a housing priority due to his ‘single’ status. This person reflects ”I remember wandering around the town centre on New Year’s Eve feeling isolated, alone, desperate and felt like life was over for me. The pain of being separated from my kids was unbearable. I was angry and frustrated but also tired and mentally weak with nowhere or nobody to turn to. I lost all my confidence and self-esteem and felt no sense of purpose for my life”. This sentiment is typical of our many ‘Hidden Homeless’ in Bradford and was the personal experience of Hidden Homeless Ltd Founder & CEO Gary Staniforth.
